Meanwhile, the Aam Admi Party (AAP) Sunday suspended its Kisan Mahapanchayat at Chotila in Surendranagar. Top party leaders, including its convener and former Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal, were expected to attend the event at the New Marketing Yard in Chotila. It has been suspended due to heavy rains.
The Kisan Mahapanchayat was being organised to protest the government’s decision to exempt import duty on cotton. The party leaders who were supposed to attend the event included Gopal Rai, Isudan Gadhvi, Gopal Italia, Manoj Sorathiya, Hemant Khava, Sagar Rabari and Raju Kaprada, among others.
The Union government had earlier announced a duty exemption on the import of cotton till September 30. However, it was extended till December 31 after manufacturers flagged that the duty exemption given till September 30 was too short a window to place fresh orders and would only help in-transit shipments.
