Indian Immigrant In Canada Alleges Extortion After Gunfire Hits Brampton Home

| Updated: January 12, 2026 16:50

An Indian national living in Canada has reported an alleged extortion attempt after his residence in Brampton came under gunfire while his family was inside.

According to the media in Canada, the man, who migrated to Canada three years ago and operates an immigration and education consultancy, has chosen to remain anonymous citing security concerns. He told media outlets that multiple shots were fired at his house last weekend when he, his wife and their child were present. He has since filed a complaint with the police.

According to the victim, he received a video on his mobile phone a day after the incident showing the shooting. The footage appeared to have been recorded from inside a vehicle as the attacker fired at his home. Soon after, he received calls from the alleged extortionists demanding C$500,000 and giving him 24 hours to arrange the money. He was allegedly threatened with harm to his family if he failed to comply.

“First, they sent me the video, and then they called,” the man was quoted as saying, adding that when he told them he could not pay the amount, he was threatened with deadly consequences for his family.

Media reports further said that security camera footage from a neighbouring property also captured the shooting. Police said at least eight rounds were fired, with bullets damaging vehicles parked in the driveway and striking the garage door.

Fearing for their safety, the man said his family has vacated the house near Sandalwood Parkway and Creditview Road and does not plan to return. While authorities say similar extortion cases have previously been reported in the area, the victim said he is unaware of why he was targeted.

Peel Regional Police confirmed that no suspect information has been made public so far. The investigation is being handled by the Extortion Investigations Task Force, which was set up in 2024 following a surge in extortion cases involving members of the South Asian business community.

Police data shows that more than 400 extortion-related cases were reported in the region last year. In December, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown urged the federal government to step in, warning of a growing threat from extortion rackets and transnational organised crime. He said that without federal intervention, communities like Brampton remain exposed to criminal networks that operate across borders, exploit digital platforms and intimidate victims into silence.
