Iran Airspace Closure Disrupts Indian Flights, Airlines Issue Passenger Advisories

| Updated: January 15, 2026 11:59

Indian airlines have alerted passengers after Iran suspended access to its airspace, leading to disruptions across several international flight routes. Major carriers such as Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet confirmed that the sudden restriction has forced them to alter flight paths, resulting in delays and cancellations.

The airspace shutdown follows escalating unrest within Iran, marked by widespread protests and heightened tensions with the United States. These developments have had a direct impact on international aviation traffic passing through the region.

Air India stated that, due to the evolving security situation, flights that normally transit Iranian airspace are now being diverted through alternate corridors. This change has increased flight durations and, in some cases, made operations unviable, leading to cancellations. The airline emphasized that passenger and crew safety remains its highest priority and advised travelers to verify flight details on its official website before arriving at the airport.

IndiGo also acknowledged disruptions to its overseas services. The airline said it is closely monitoring the situation and working to assist affected customers. IndiGo has offered flexible options, including rescheduling and refunds, for passengers whose journeys have been impacted by the airspace closure, noting that the situation is beyond the airline’s control.

SpiceJet issued a similar notice, cautioning travelers that some flights may face changes due to the restriction over Iran. Passengers were encouraged to regularly check flight status online or reach out to the airline’s round-the-clock customer support for updates and assistance.

The closure of Iranian airspace has emerged as a significant challenge for airlines operating long-haul routes, with ripple effects being felt across international travel networks.
