‘Kept Going’: 91-Year-Old Defies Age, Works 12-Hour Shifts Without Complaint

| Updated: November 18, 2025 17:29

Our days overflow with advice on how to live long and stay healthy. Wellness professionals present a long checklist. It could be burning a certain number of calories, sleeping early, never missing the sunrise, monitoring diet by eating according to age, and eliminating stress.

Sometimes ‘keeping going’ could just be the right formula to reverse ageing, at least in the mind.

A 91-year-old man in Singapore proved just that. He does 12-hour shifts without ever asking why he shouldn’t deserve a retired life. This man believes in staying in the present, being purposeful and connected with life.

His exchange with Australian traveller Jaden Laing has resonated widely on social media and even reached actor R Madhavan.

While travelling through Singapore, Laing met the elderly man working in a public restroom. What began as a casual greeting left him deeply impressed: he was still showing up for work every day.

When Laing asked about the secret to staying fit at his age, the man laughed and said he ate whatever he normally ate, did not exercise and simply ‘kept going’.

Moved by the man’s warmth and resilience, Laing offered him a small tip for lunch and later shared the video on Instagram. In the caption, he encouraged people to treat older individuals with respect and referred to a verse from Leviticus about honouring the elderly.

The video spread quickly and drew emotional reactions from viewers around the world.

Actor R Madhavan reshared the video to spread the message of what an enlightened mind can achieve. Many viewers agreed, saying that his constant movement and positive outlook could be the real reason behind his good health. Others appreciated Laing’s gesture, with one person saying the tip could easily cover the man’s groceries for a month.

Social media users posted hundreds of comments, made public by a section of the media.

One person wrote that he was healthy because he was active daily.

Another said that if everyone followed this attitude towards strangers, the world would be paradise.

However, some also objected to the way seniors often had to work cleaning jobs and food court jobs well past retirement age, and thanked Laing for making the man’s day.
