No Shawls, No Fires: Winter Eludes Gujarat

| Updated: January 2, 2026 18:42

The familiar sight of people wrapped in shawls and huddled around small fires has been missing in Gujarat. And that’s because winter has been indifferent to Gujarat of late.

Gujarat reportedly moved through the last two months without a single cold wave.

It revealed a broader warming trend seen across India, claimed reports.

The India Meteorological Department said 2025 was the eighth warmest year on record.

It also said the 2016–25 period was the warmest decade so far. It explains why we haven’t been seeing people brushing palms together to keep warm.

According to a report, in January, below-normal minimum temperatures are likely over large parts of the country. These include Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and east Rajasthan in the north, Bihar and Bengal in the east, most of central India, and northern parts of the south peninsula.

At the same time, parts of northwest India (Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh) along with northeast India and most of the south are likely to record above-normal temperatures during both day and night.

After the first few days of January, days are expected to turn warmer than normal in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Bengal. Nights, however, are likely to be colder across the region, leading to fog on many days.

Against this backdrop, Gujarat did not experience a cold wave during November and December. This has reportedly been the case for the second consecutive year.

Minimum temperatures stayed normal or above normal across the state, according to IMD data cited by a national daily.

December is usually the coldest month in Gujarat.

In Ahmedabad, the average minimum temperature in December was 15.4°C, which was 1.9°C above normal. The average maximum temperature stood at 30°C, 0.6°C above normal. The lowest minimum recorded during the month was 13.1°C on December 12. The highest minimum was 17.5°C on December 1, reports mentioned.

Other major cities showed similar conditions. Surat and Rajkot reportedly recorded relatively higher average minimum temperatures. Vadodara’s temperatures remained at par.

The lowest minimum temperature in December was 13.8°C in Surat, 11.8°C in Vadodara, and 12°C in Rajkot.

Naliya, one of the coldest places in Gujarat, saw temperatures fall to 10°C or below on only five days between November 1 and December 31. This was unusual given that December is typically the coldest month. The IMD defines a cold wave in the plains as a minimum temperature of 10°C or less and a drop of 4.5°C to 6.4°C below normal.

In November, Ahmedabad recorded minimum temperatures averaging 0.6°C above normal. Maximum temperatures were 2°C below normal. This pattern was linked to changing weather conditions and unseasonal rain in parts of the state.

Early in the month, the gap between minimum and maximum temperatures stayed below 10°C. On November 3, the minimum temperature deviation reached 6.5°C, with the minimum at 25.5°C.
