A third-year BTech student of Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) died by suicide on the campus late on Sunday night.
Advait Nair, 20, was a student of the Computer Science and Engineering department of the University in Surat. He had enrolled on an NRI seat in 2023.
According to details, Nair jumped off his hostel block around 11.15 p.m. and died during treatment at a hospital.
Umra police have registered an accidental death and launched an investigation.
Hundreds of students staged a protest against the SVNIT management, alleged a “torture culture” on campus and holding it responsible for the tragedy.
Umra police inspector Jignesh Rathwa told a section of the media that Nair stayed on the second floor in B Block of Bhabha Bhavan hostel, which has eight floors.
The inspector further said that Nair had stopped going to class for the last three months, preferring to stay in his room. He would talk to limited people, he added.
Police are checking CCTV footage from the hostel.
Nair was originally from Kerala and his parents live in Oman.
Information suggests that initially Nair used to score good percentiles in early semesters. Thereafter, his performances gradually went down and he started to miss the classes.
The student’s body was taken for the last rites in Kerala. His parents flew in from Oman.
Students protesting after the incident alleged that the ambulance was called very late, delaying Nair’s transfer to the hospital. They even alleged that the University spends more on the infrastructure but very little on student’s welfare.
