Even as the coastal town of Bhavnagar has been waiting since 2006 for then Chief Minister Narendra Modi to fulfil his promises, today Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated development projects worth ₹34,200 crore in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, emphasizing India’s commitment to self-reliance.
When Modi was the CM he promised several developmental works for Bhavnagar in Saurashtra. This included a 12- lane road where he said 75,000 vehicles would be plying daily by 2020 and boost Bhavnagar’s slow economy. Not a brick has yet been laid for this project. A maritime university was also proposed among many other things in the city. Today, he announced that the University will come up at Lothal which is in Ahmedabad district. While the University has been now set up in another district, not a single brick has been laid for the promised 12 lane road on the banks of Kalpasar project.
Modi’s fake promises also included an international standard diamond park in Bhavnagar, GIDCs and ports. He has also promised when he was the Chief Minister that he will shift Western Railways’ headquarters to Bhavnagar. Earlier, Bhavnagar was a hub for locomotive repairs however that also has now been moved elsewhere from Bhavnagar.
However, today Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of development works worth Rs 34,200 crore at a public event from Jawahar Maidan.. This includes development projects worth over Rs 26,000 crore for Gujarat. Incidentally, this was the same ground where he had made big promises in 2006 and 2012.
“Today, India is moving forward with the spirit of ‘Vishwabandhu’. We have no major enemy in the world. Our biggest enemy is our dependence on other countries. This is our biggest enemy, and together we must defeat this enemy of India, the enemy of dependence. We must always reiterate this. The greater the foreign dependence, the greater the country’s failure,” he said while addressing the gathering at the inauguration event in Bhavnagar.
In Gujarat, the Prime Minister inaugurated projects valued at more than Rs 26,000 crore, such as the HPLNG Regasification Terminal at Chhara Port, new renewable energy projects including a 600 MW green initiative and the complete solarisation of Dhordo village, as well as expansions of major hospitals in Bhavnagar and Jamnagar. He also launched highway works and laid foundations for additional LNG infrastructure and urban transport projects.
“For global peace, stability, and prosperity, the country with the world’s largest population must become Atmanirbhar. If we remain dependent on others, our self-respect will be hurt. We cannot leave the future of 1.4 billion countrymen to others. We cannot leave the resolution for the country’s development to the dependence of others. We cannot put the future of future generations at stake… There is only one medicine for a hundred sorrows, and that is a self-reliant India” PM Modi added in his speech.
Yesterday, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Shaktisinh Gohil had reminded him of the promises that he made in the past and has asked him to seek forgiveness from the people of Bhavnagar.
Gohil and Gujarat Congress Spokesman Manhar Patel had given a detailed list of fake promises made by Chief Minister Modi to Bhavnagar in 2006 and 2012. Gohil had shown videos of his functions making these promises.
“Not a single promise given has been fulfilled. The Prime Minister should say that he regrets for not being able to fulfil the promise and seek apology from the people of Bhavnagar,” Gohil told Vibes of India.
Development will not take place at a steady pace, but will happen at a fast pace, Gohil said, quoting what Modi had said in the past. CM Modi had said “Vikas(development) will not come walking to Bhavnagar; it going to come jumping and in long strides”. “Unfortunately, the so called Vikas commitment has completely skipped Bhavnagar”, Gohil said.
Among several things, Modi had said that Bhavnagar will benefit the most from Dholera Sir. He had also spoken about a 12- lane road on the banks of the Kalpasar Project.
As the chief minister, Modi had been to Bhavnagar in 2006 and 2012. Gohil held that the PM was coming to Bhavnagar as the civic elections are approaching.
Not a brick has been laid for a single development work that was promised, Gohil alleged.
Gohil recalled that Modi had also spoken about giving Bharat Ratna to Bhavnagar Maharaja Krishnakumarsinh. Bhavnagar was the first princely State which had come forward to join the Dominion of India, paving way for other 564 States across India to follow suit. Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had both acknowledged vision and co-operation of Krishnakumar Sinhji.
Bhavnagar is not well connected with road, air or rail traffic like other major cities in Gujarat resulting in business and industries avoiding the port town.
