PM To States: “Compete In Reforms, Good Governance, Pro-Development Policies”

| Updated: August 26, 2025 14:04

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday exhorted states of the country to compete with each other in reforms, good governance and pro-development policies.

He was flagging off “e-VITARA” — Suzuki’s first-ever global strategic Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) at the company’s motor plant in Hansalpur. The PM also inaugurated the next phase of India’s battery ecosystem with the start of local production of hybrid battery electrodes at the Lithium-Ion Battery plant in Hansalpur. It is a joint venture of Toshiba, Denso and Suzuki.

Modi said the competition among the states will help India to become a developed nation by 2047.

He said if the states keep their policies neat and clean and without ifs and buts then the investor who is coming to India will think where to go. This should be the scale of the competition, he said, adding that each state should take advantage of the investments.

The Prime Minister recalled how two decades ago the Vibrant Gujarat Summits began when he was the chief minister of Gujarat and efforts were made to bring in foreign investment.

Talking highly about Indo-Japan relations, he said that this is more than friendship and added that they give more importance to culture. He recalled how in Gujarat land was given to Suzuki in 2012 in Hansalpur and golf courses were developed, Japanese cuisine was introduced in the state taking into consideration Japanese investment. “Even my visiting cards were in Japanese and the promotional videos were dubbed in Japanese,” he said.

He said the foundation laid in 2014 is helping India to become self-reliant.

India has the strength of democracy, the advantage of the demography and skilled work force and that is a win-win situation for the partners, he remarked.

Once again advocating for being vocal for local, Modi said “Swadeshi” should become the principle of life.

He said for him it is very clear the money can be of any country, currency, “black”, but the sweat has to be of India, it has to be the fragrance of India’s soil and that is “Made in India”.

Giving the example of Suzuki, Modi said electric vehicles manufactured here will be exported to 100 countries.

According to him, Suzuki is a brand ambassador of “Make in India”.

The PM said that Maruti Suzuki has entered “teenage” and this is the time to spread the wings.

He said in the last four years, Maruti Suzuki has been the biggest car exporter from India and now EV export will also be taken to that level.

Battery is a critical part of the EV ecosystem and now that is also being manufactured in India, he remarked.

He observed that now old vehicles and ambulances are also being converted into hybrid EV. The PM saw a prototype of one such ambulance in Hansalpur on Tuesday. Clean energy and clean mobility is the future, he pointed out.

Modi said that critical minerals will be looked out for at 1,200 places in the country.
