Rahul Gandhi Warns Of ‘Constitution Under Threat’, Targets BJP In Berlin Address

| Updated: December 23, 2025 12:27

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to dismantle India’s constitutional framework and pledged that the Opposition will build an effective resistance capable of unseating the ruling party.

Speaking to students at the Hertie School in Berlin during his recent Germany visit, Gandhi alleged that the BJP has mounted a systematic takeover of India’s institutions and is using them to consolidate political control.

The Congress on Monday released an hour-long video of his interaction. It shows him describing this as a direct challenge not just to India, but to democratic values worldwide.

According to Gandhi, the BJP’s political vision undermines the core principles of the Constitution, including equality among citizens, states, languages and religions. He said the central idea of the Constitution—that every individual carries equal worth—is being eroded.

He stressed that India’s democratic system, given its scale and diversity, is a global public good. Any weakening of it, he argued, has consequences beyond national borders. “An attack on Indian democracy is also an attack on global democracy,” he said.

Gandhi said the Opposition’s response must go beyond merely flagging concerns about elections. Instead, he called for a structured and sustained form of resistance to counter what he described as the “weaponisation” of institutions. The real battle, he said, is not against the BJP alone, but against its alleged capture of the country’s institutional framework.

Responding to questions, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha claimed that key democratic institutions are no longer functioning independently. He alleged that agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are being misused to target political opponents, pointing to what he described as a stark imbalance in cases filed against opposition leaders compared to those linked to the BJP.

On elections, Gandhi reiterated the Congress’s position that it had secured victory in Haryana and raised doubts over the fairness of the Maharashtra polls.

He also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s economic approach, claiming it was an extension of earlier policies and had reached a dead end, leaving little room for further progress.

Referring to the INDIA bloc, Gandhi said that while alliance partners may differ tactically, they remain united in opposing the ideological foundation of the RSS. He added that this unity is visible in Parliament, particularly when challenging legislation the alliance disagrees with.

Gandhi concluded by recalling how India successfully forged a political and economic union at Independence through its Constitution, contrasting it with Europe’s long struggle to build a similar framework, and warning that undermining this legacy would have far-reaching consequences.
