Rajdhani Express Hits Elephant Herd In Assam, Coaches Derailed

| Updated: December 20, 2025 13:07

A tragic train accident was reported early Saturday morning in Assam’s Hojai district when the Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express collided with a herd of elephants. Eight elephants died in the incident and one was injured. Five coaches of the train were derailed, though no passenger injuries or deaths were reported.

According to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NF Railway), the mishap took place around 2.15 am after a herd of elephants suddenly crossed the tracks. The loco pilot immediately applied emergency brakes, but the train could not be stopped in time, leading to the collision.

Following the accident, the Lumding Division of NF Railway initiated swift relief measures. Senior officials, including the NF Railway General Manager and the Divisional Railway Manager of Lumding, reached the site to oversee operations. Passengers from the affected coaches were temporarily shifted to vacant berths in other coaches.

After necessary checks and arrangements, the train resumed its journey at around 6.15 am towards Guwahati. Railway authorities stated that additional coaches would be attached once the train reaches Guwahati, after which it would continue its onward journey to its final destination.

The incident disrupted rail services on the Jamunamukh–Kampur section. Forest official Subhash Kadam from Assam’s Nagaon Division said several scheduled trains have been diverted through the UP line. Forest and railway teams have begun restoration and clearance work at the site.

The Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express operates between Sairang near Aizawl in Mizoram and Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi.
