Self-Deportation From US Proves Costly For 40-Year-Old Gujarat Man

| Updated: September 23, 2025 17:12

He sneaked into the US through ‘donkey’ routes and stayed there illegally for almost five and a half years. And now that US president Donald Trump has begun the crackdown on illegal immigrants, he thought of self-deporting to India.

However, for this 40-year-old, from Jagudan village of Gujarat, things went terribly wrong when immigration officials flagged the documents that he had as fake on his arrival at the IGI Airport in New Delhi on September 8. He was arrested on the charges of forgery and violating passport rules.

Sources said for self-deportation, he procured a forged passport under the name of some resident of Himachal Pradesh. Sources added that the passport that was issued in Atlanta in 2020 lacked certain basic security features.

He has been booked under Sections 318 (4) — cheating, 319 (2) — cheating by impersonation, 336 (3) — forgery, 340 (2) — forged document or electronic record and using it as a genuine of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita ad Section 12 of Passport Act.

The police have seized the forged passport, his travel papers, deportee records ad CCTV logos as evidence.

In 2018, he first went to Vietnam on a valid passport in October 2018.

In the US, he stayed with another native of Mehsana. He worked at a motel and fuel station.

A large number of people from Gujarat and other parts of the country, especially Punjab, are staying illegally and there have been instances of self-deportation.
