In July, an Indian woman was arrested at a Target store in Illinois for allegedly stealing items worth over Rs 1 lakh.
In September, police bodycam footage showed an Indian woman crying and hyperventilating as police questioned her inside a Target store for shoplifting. She declined an interpreter, saying her native language was Gujarati.
Somewhere we find another video of an Indian woman crying and pleading with US police officers after allegedly being caught shoplifting at a Target store in the US.
The irony can’t be missed. Whenever Indians are linked to any scam or theft in the US, the episodes are magnified beyond proportion.
In the latest installment of the series portraying Indians as the sole wrongdoers or insensitive, a video has surfaced of a woman living in the US who was allegedly caught stealing goods worth Rs 80 lakh from a store managed by an Indian.
The video, which has garnered nearly nine lakh views, shows the woman pleading with the manager not to send her to jail.
The Indian store manager is shown confronting the woman. According to reports, he said he had entrusted her with the store keys. He accused her of repeated theft over three years.
The Indian store manager said that he had given her his store keys in good faith. He accused her of stealing from him repeatedly. He added that he had compiled evidence to present to the authorities. Initially, the woman denied the accusations.
Once she was informed about the evidence, she began pleading for leniency. She said she had a five or seven-year-old daughter and nobody else. She also said the matter could be resolved without sending her to jail and insisted that she did not feel like she had been stealing.
The authenticity of the video could not be verified. Whether it’s a blockbuster drama or just a TikTok-level tragedy remains up for debate.
As expected, the video sparked commentary on social media, with users pointing out racial bias in how such incidents are covered.
One user wrote that such cases usually never come out when whites are involved, citing everything from stolen native lands to the loots they made. Another added that if it were an Indian woman found stealing, there would be dozens of tweets with 100k likes calling all Indians scammers.
