In what can only be described as a masterclass in diplomatic storytelling, US President Donald Trump once again turned a heavy discussion into a one-man reality show.
Mixing tariffs and helicopters, he offered a glimpse into US–India relations, insisting the relationship is in the right space, even if India is clearly and rightfully upset.
Speaking at the House GOP Member Retreat, Trump reportedly said India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “not that happy with me” after Washington slapped steep tariffs on India over its continued purchases of Russian oil.
He claimed PM Modi personally came calling to discuss the matter. “Prime Minister Modi came to see me, ‘Sir, may I see you please’. Yes.”
And despite the apparent strain, Trump insisted relations remain warm. “I have a very good relationship with him. He’s not that happy with me because you know they’re paying a lot of tariffs now because they’re not doing the oil, but they are, they’ve now reduced it very substantially, as you know, from Russia,” he was quoted as saying.
The US President has imposed 50% tariffs on India, and that includes 25% linked specifically to its purchases of Russian oil.
Trump also revealed that defence deals were part of the conversation. He claimed that India was aggrieved over the long wait for Apache helicopters.
“We’re changing it. We’re changing it. India ordered 68 Apaches,” he reportedly confirmed.
And that was typical of Trump. His words blended trade policy and foreign relations. The tariffs may be revised and the India-US ties could get a fresh spray of warmth. What seems unchanged throughout is the drama quotient.
