India has decided to withdraw the families and dependents of its officials posted there.
The decision follows rising security concerns linked to increased extremist activity in Bangladesh. The move comes just weeks before Bangladesh is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections.
According to reports, the step was taken as a precaution.
Dependents of officials at the Indian High Commission and other diplomatic posts have been advised to return to India. .
Such an arrangement is known as a non-family posting. It is among the most stringent security measures used by India. It is usually imposed in locations considered unstable or hazardous.
However, according to reports, there is no clarity on when families will withdraw. It is also unclear whether or when they will return.
India has its High Commission in Dhaka. It also has diplomatic posts in Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi, and Sylhet.
The decision comes amid strained ties between India and Bangladesh. Relations have remained tense since the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus took charge in 2024. The transition followed the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina regime. Both sides have increased security at their missions after recent protests.
Concerns have also risen over violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. Incidents have increased since the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi on December 12. India has raised the issue with Bangladeshi authorities. It has urged firm action against communal violence.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India continues to see a disturbing pattern. He said minorities, their homes, and their businesses have faced repeated attacks by extremist elements. He also pointed to a troubling tendency to explain such violence as personal or political disputes.
According to him, this approach emboldens perpetrators. It also deepens fear and insecurity among minority communities.
