The White House has launched a new “media bias” page that it claims will highlight inaccurate reporting. But instead of promoting transparency, critics say the page is being used to attack news outlets that challenge President Donald Trump.
According to reports, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has condemned the initiative and called for the page to be removed immediately.
As of December 3, 2025, the page singles out CBS News, The Boston Globe, and The Independentas “Media Offenders of the Week.” According to the White House, these outlets misreported Trump’s statements — yet no evidence or detailed explanations are provided to support the accusations.
Another section, titled the “Hall of Shame,” lists articles the administration labels as false or misleading. Each item is tagged with categories such as “Lie” or “Left-Wing Madness”, revealing the overtly political tone of the platform. The White House also includes a “Leaderboard” ranking news organizations it claims are repeat offenders. As of publication, The Washington Post tops that list, followed by MSNBC (now called MS NOW), CBS News, CNN, The New York Times, Politico, and The Wall Street Journal. The ranking is presented with slick graphics that resemble professional data journalism — but RSF argues the numbers behind them are unreliable, comparing the tactic to propaganda techniques used by authoritarian governments.
RSF North America’s Executive Director, Clayton Weimers, has been quoted criticizing the project sharply. He said the Trump administration’s attacks on the press have grown increasingly childish, yet warned that the hostility should not be dismissed as mere theatrics. According to Weimers, the administration has been steadily restricting press freedom and limiting access to information in meaningful ways for more than a year.
Escalating Hostility Toward Reporters
The “Hall of Shame” is only the latest example of Trump’s sustained conflict with the media. In recent months, the president has filed lawsuits against The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, while Disney and Paramount chose to settle their own disputes with him outside of court.
Trump’s hostility has been especially pointed toward female journalists. He has responded to their questions with personal insults, often in full view of cameras. In mid-November, he shouted “Quiet! Quiet, piggy!” at Bloomberg reporter Catherine Lucey when she pressed him about newly released documents related to Jeffrey Epstein.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended Trump afterward, saying he becomes frustrated when he believes reporters are spreading misinformation.
On November 26, Trump called a New York Times reporter a “third-rate journalist who is ugly inside and out.” The following day, he asked CBS correspondent Nancy Cordes whether she was “a stupid person” after she questioned the government about its vetting of Afghans admitted to the U.S. after Kabul fell in 2021.
Using State Power Against the Press
Beyond verbal attacks, Trump has also used the machinery of government to weaken media outlets he views unfavorably. Under his direction, Congress slashed billions in public funding for National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).
His administration also imposed steep cuts on international broadcasters Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. These cuts led to mass layoffs and forced many employees into unpaid leave, diminishing independent news sources in countries where such reporting is often the only alternative to state media. RSF and several VOA employees are challenging these decisions in court, with a final ruling still pending.
