X has acknowledged a significant lapse in content moderation and deleted over 600 accounts after the Indian government raised concerns about the misuse of its AI tool, Grok. Following a stern warning from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the platform also blocked approximately 3,500 posts and pledged to prevent obscene imagery moving forward.
Government sources confirmed that X admitted its mistake and assured authorities it would comply with Indian laws, particularly those outlined in the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the IT Rules, 2021. This followed a MeitY notice on January 2, giving X 72 hours to address violations of user safety and dignity, especially concerning AI-generated content targeting women.
The controversy arose after Grok went viral for generating sexually explicit content, including manipulated images and videos. MeitY’s concerns centered on the platform’s failure to prevent the circulation of such material, which it said violated privacy and safety laws.
X has since pledged to strengthen its safeguards and remove unlawful content promptly. The company was also reminded that failure to comply could result in losing “safe harbour” protection under the IT Act, with further legal consequences.
