Gujarat: 33 MLAs, 6 IAS AND 5 IPS Officers Share June 1 Birthday

| Updated: June 1, 2022 10:56

The first day of June is here and in Gujarat, it has a special significance. June 1 is celebrated as the birthday for 33 Gujarat MLAs, 5 IPS officers and 6 IAS officers. In some cases, one cannot argue the validity of the DoB furnished as June 1. Interestingly, in most cases, there’s more to it. In Gujarat, June 1 is a threshold date used as a “cut-off” for admissions to lower kindergarten (LKG). A day to the left and you are a year older for the admission and a day to the right and you are still not eligible. Hence, many parents choose to go with June 1.

Given that corruption abounds in India, birth certificates and other papers are then re-worked according to the new date. Even today, not only does June 1 see a scramble for venues hosting birthday parties, but a lot of government office bearers also apply for leave.

In fact, on conditions of anonymity, a BJP MLA shared with Vibes of India his correct DoB when wished promptly last midnight!

In a candid vein, M.L. Ninama (IPS), DIG Central Jail, Lajpur, (June 1,1966) shared with Vibes of India: “Parents were by and large unlettered when I was little. Teachers did the needful and thought of it as public service.”
