The continuous 24-hour rainfall on Saturday witnessed the death of four people in Saurashtra.
On Friday evening, two labourer children’s bodies were discovered near a lake in the industrial area of Shapar-Veraval, bordering Rajkot.
Arjun Bariya and his brother Ashwin, aged 5 and 9 respectively, from Madhya Pradesh, were ragpickers, went to waste collection on Thursday and hadn’t returned home.
Two ceramic industry workers also reportedly drowned in a lake, taking a bath when the water level suddenly rose in Bela Rangpar village of Morbi.
A team of the municipality rescued a student bus from a private university. They were stranded in the flooded area of the Lalpur underpass in Gondal town of Rajkot district on Friday evening.
When their transport vehicle caught in turbulent water near Lodhika in Rajkot on Friday, seven labourers also came dangerously close to losing their lives. The car was stuck in the Fofal river’s causeway. To save their lives, several jumped onto the roof of the automobile. Villagers rushed to their aid and threw ropes to get them all out safely.
Heavy rainfall was seen in the Junagadh district and Gir forest, pushing the district administration to alert the residents in low-lying villages in a few talukas.
The highest rainfall was recorded in Manavadar taluka at 106 mm. Followed by 82 mm of rain in Junagadh and taluka each, and Maliya Hatina and Vanthli taluka with 75mm and 82 mm significant rainfall.
The heavy downpour caused a freshwater flow at the Ozat weir of the Anandpar dam near Junagadh. The city of Junagadh receives water from this reservoir. Low-lying settlements like Anandpar, Raipur, Sukhpur, and Nagalpur were warned as this reservoir began to flood.
In the meantime, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that over the next five days, isolated locations in Porbandar, Junagadh, Amreli, Dwarka, Gir, Somnath, Kutch, and Diu in Saurashtra could experience heavy rainfall.
