Jaisalmer: Hills Of Forts Which Are Still Alive

| Updated: January 10, 2023 18:03

If geology interests you, then Jaisalmer, Rajasthan is where you need to journey.  The Wood Fossil Park, also known as Aakal, is about 15 kilometres from the city. Geologic tragedies that occurred in the Thar Desert 180 million years ago can be discovered and traced here. Jaisalmer also serves as a border guard for western Rajasthan (and India).

This ‘Golden City’ is located near the Pakistani border and close to the Thar Desert. The Jaisalmer Fort, also known as Sonar Qila, is the city’s most prominent landmark (Golden Fort). Unlike most Indian forts, Jaisalmer Fort is more than just a tourist attraction. It is home to shops, hotels, and ancient havelis (homes) where families have lived for generations.

Jaisalmer dates back to the 12th century. Rawal Jaisal, the eldest heir of the Rawal of Deoraj, was passed over for the throne of Lodurva, and a younger half-brother was crowned king, according to history. When Rawal Jaisal was looking for a new location for his capital, he came across sage Result. The sage told him about Krishna’s prophecy that a descendant of his Yaduvanshi clan would found a new kingdom here. Rawal Jaisal built a mud fort, named it Jaisalmer after himself, and declared it his capital in 1156.

Interestingly, you can visit Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli which was built in the nineteenth century by two architect brothers. They worked on the haveli from both sides, and the result is a beautiful symmetrical construction. Decoration includes miniature paintings and mighty tuskers carved from yellow sandstone.
