Six people, including a local leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party have been apprehended by the police during a late-night police raid at a farmhouse in Gujarat’s Bharuch district.
The group was allegedly engaged in illegal gambling operations for personal profit.
The Bharuch District Crime Branch reported that the raid took place on Friday night at a farmhouse in Vataria village, believed to be owned by Fatesinh Vasava. Acting on specific intelligence that Vasava was organizing betting activities at the location, a night patrol unit conducted the operation and detained six people found at the scene.
Police officials confirmed the seizure of R 4.18 lakh in cash, suspected to be connected to the gambling activities.
Those arrested include Fatesinh Vasava,45; Divyakumar Vasava, 32; Ashwajitsinh Rathore, 38; Mukesh Bhoi, 35; Jaspal Singh Sikligar, 36; and Mehulkumar Dave, 45.
A seventh individual, identified only as Dinesh, is currently absconding and has been declared wanted in the case.
Fatesinh Vasava, who had previously contested the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections from the Jhagadia constituency on a Congress ticket, switched allegiance to the BJP shortly after the polls. In that election, he faced off against veteran MLA Chhotubhai Vasava and BJP candidate Ritesh Vasava. The seat was ultimately claimed by Ritesh Vasava, marking a first-time victory for the BJP in the constituency.
The arrest of Fatesinh has stirred conversations within local political circles. However, the BJP has not yet announced any disciplinary steps. When contacted, BJP Gujarat’s media convener, Yagnesh Dave, acknowledged the incident to a national daily and said the party has been informed. “A decision on the matter will be taken after reviewing the situation,” he stated.
