The stage of international diplomacy at the United Nations calls for carefully scripted speeches. Unless, of course, the speaker is a certain Donald Trump. What was meant to be a standard address at the UN unravelled into what he later described as a string of calculated disruptions. He outlined “three very sinister events” that, he claimed, turned the day into something far more troubling.
According to reports, he alleged that the incidents were part of a greater conspiracy. The US President announced that the Secret Service would be investigating the matter.
Trump expressed his frustration in a lengthy post on his social media platform, stating that the string of mishaps had left him in a foul mood and hinting at a coordinated effort against him during his time at the UN.
In his detailed Truth Social post, Trump referred to the incidents as “a real disgrace,” saying they were not isolated but part of a larger pattern.
He recounted that the first incident occurred when the escalator leading to the Main Speaking Floor abruptly came to a halt.
A narrow escape
According to him, it stopped suddenly, and both he and wife Melania narrowly avoided falling forward onto the metal steps. He credited their grip on the handrails for preventing injury and insisted this was a deliberate act of sabotage.
He referred to a report, which allegedly mentioned that UN workers had “joked about turning off an escalator” prior to the incident. Trump demanded the arrest of those responsible.
The second event involved a malfunctioning teleprompter. As Trump addressed a global audience and leaders present in the hall, he claimed the teleprompter failed completely, “stone cold dark,” in his words.
He said his immediate reaction was that of disbelief. The episode left him wondering what kind of environment he found himself in.
No teleprompter
Trump described how, as he stood before a global television audience and a hall filled with world leaders, his teleprompter suddenly failed.
“It was stone cold dark,” he reportedly said, recalling his immediate reaction: “Wow, first the escalator event, and now a bad teleprompter. What kind of a place is this?” He continued by explaining that he delivered his speech without any teleprompter support for the first 15 minutes, until it eventually started working again.
Despite the disruption, he noted, “The good news is the Speech has gotten fantastic reviews. Maybe they appreciated the fact that very few people could have done what I did.”
Not a word heard
He then recounted a third issue that followed his speech. According to him, he was informed that the sound had been completely off in the auditorium, meaning world leaders couldn’t hear his address unless they were using interpreters’ earpieces. After finishing, the first person he saw was Melania, seated in the front row. “How did I do?” he asked her. Her reply was blunt: “I couldn’t hear a word you said.”
Trump concluded that the events were no coincidence, calling them “triple sabotage at the UN.” He insisted those responsible should be ashamed and announced he would be sending a letter to the Secretary General demanding an immediate investigation. He called for security footage from the escalator area to be preserved, especially from the emergency stop button. He confirmed that the Secret Service was already involved.
He also spared no digs at US allies in Europe, reproaching their response to the war in Ukraine and their immigration policies. Trump reportedly told world leaders their countries were “going to hell.”
