Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner has been appointed captain of Gujarat Giants for the forthcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL), the franchise confirmed on Monday.
The 28-year-old has been a key figure for the Giants, featuring in 25 WPL matches over three seasons. During that period, she has amassed 567 runs, including five half-centuries, while maintaining an impressive strike rate of 141.75. Ahead of the WPL 2026 Auction, the franchise retained Gardner for Rs. 3.5 crore, making her one of only two retained players alongside Beth Mooney, who was kept for Rs. 2.5 crore.
Announcing the decision on social media, the Giants highlighted Gardner’s leadership qualities, stating that her experience and confidence make her well suited to guide the team in the new season.
Gardner, who has won the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup three times, has been part of the Gujarat Giants setup since the league began in 2023. In the previous edition, she played an important role as the team finished third, eventually losing to champions Mumbai Indians by 47 runs.
The upcoming fourth season of the WPL will be staged in two phases, with matches scheduled in Navi Mumbai and Vadodara. The tournament will begin at the D. Y. Patil Stadium, where Gujarat Giants will start their campaign against UP Warriorz on January 10.
