Hardik Pandya’s possible return to Gujarat Titans has reportedly fallen through after the all-rounder made captaincy a condition for his comeback. The franchise was open to bringing its former captain back and had even discussed the possibility with current skipper Shubman Gill. However, the demand for Pandya to regain the captaincy became the main stumbling block.
Pandya had led Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in their debut season in 2022, before returning to Mumbai Indians in 2024. Now, with uncertainty surrounding his future at Mumbai Indians, talks about a possible return to Gujarat had emerged.
Gujarat Open to Pandya’s Return
Gujarat Titans were reportedly willing to explore a reunion with Pandya.
The franchise had also spoken to Shubman Gill, who is currently the team’s captain, about the possibility of Pandya returning through a trade. Gill was understood to be comfortable with the franchise bringing Pandya back.
However, the situation changed when Pandya’s demand to return as captain was put forward.
That condition was not accepted, effectively ending the possibility of the move.
Gill currently holds an important leadership role in Indian cricket as the captain of the national team in Tests and ODIs, in addition to leading Gujarat Titans in the IPL.
Pandya Camp Denies Direct Talks
While the reports have indicated discussions surrounding a possible transfer, Pandya’s spokesperson has denied that the player directly spoke to any franchise about a trade.
According to his side, if any approach was made to Pandya, it would have been directed towards Mumbai Indians, rather than being a direct conversation between the player and another franchise.
Gujarat Titans, meanwhile, have declined to comment on the reported discussions.
Uncertainty Over Pandya’s Future at Mumbai Indians
The development comes after growing uncertainty over Pandya’s position at Mumbai Indians.
The franchise had a difficult IPL season, winning only four of its 14 matches and finishing ninth in the standings. The result also extended Mumbai Indians’ wait for another IPL title to six years.
Pandya’s future as captain had already come under discussion, with the team management reportedly considering whether he should continue leading the side and even reviewing his role within the squad.
Team Management Raises Concerns
The concerns inside the Mumbai Indians camp became more visible after their final match of the season against Rajasthan Royals.
The coaching staff reportedly told senior players that they needed to be more receptive to instructions and willing to follow the team’s plans.
There were reportedly instances where recommendations made by the coaching staff, including those supported by data, were not followed by players.
This raised questions about how the team was approaching its strategy and execution during the season.
Mumbai Indians Struggled for Individual Impact
Mumbai Indians also lacked a major individual presence in the IPL’s leading statistical races.
Despite having several high-profile players, none of their cricketers finished among the leading contenders for either the Orange Cap, awarded to the tournament’s top run-scorer, or the Purple Cap, given to the leading wicket-taker.
Their leading batter, Ryan Rickelton, finished 17th among the season’s run-scorers, while leg-spinner Allah Ghazanfar was 14th among the leading wicket-takers.
The numbers reflected a season in which Mumbai struggled to produce consistent individual performances alongside their team results.
Pandya’s Complicated Mumbai Indians Journey
Pandya’s relationship with the Mumbai Indians fanbase has also been difficult since his return.
He was released by Mumbai Indians in 2022 and subsequently joined Gujarat Titans. As captain, he immediately guided the new franchise to the IPL title in its debut season.
Two years later, Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians in 2024, taking over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma.
The change was controversial among sections of the Mumbai fanbase. Pandya was repeatedly booed during his first season back with the franchise, when Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the table.
His return to Mumbai had therefore already carried considerable pressure, and the team’s recent struggles have only increased questions surrounding his future.

The latest development puts captaincy at the centre of the uncertainty surrounding Pandya.
Gujarat Titans were reportedly willing to welcome back the player who had led them to their first IPL championship. But with Gill already established as captain, Pandya’s reported insistence on returning as skipper became a deal-breaker.
For now, the possibility of a Gujarat reunion appears to have stalled, while Pandya’s position at Mumbai Indians remains a major talking point ahead of the franchise’s next decisions.
