Carlos Alcaraz walked off Rod Laver Arena on Sunday night not just as a champion, but as a player who had rewritten tennis history. The 22-year-old Spaniard produced a fearless, composed performance to defeat Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final, sealing his first Melbourne title and completing a rare career Grand Slam.
The match, played in front of a packed house, unfolded as a gripping contest of experience versus youth. Djokovic struck first, taking the opening set 6-2 and reminding everyone why he has dominated the sport for over a decade. But Alcaraz refused to be overawed. He raised his intensity, matched Djokovic stroke for stroke, and slowly wrested control of the final.
Alcaraz claimed the next three sets 6-2, 6-3 and 7-5, closing out the match in three hours and two minutes. With that victory, he added the Australian Open trophy to his French Open, Wimbledon and US Open titles, becoming the youngest man ever to complete a career Grand Slam. The previous mark was held by Rafael Nadal, who achieved the feat at 24.
For Djokovic, the stakes were equally historic. The Serbian great was chasing a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title that would have taken him past Margaret Court’s all-time tally of 24. Despite flashes of brilliance, the milestone remained just out of reach.
Alcaraz’s triumph in the final came only two days after a punishing semifinal marathon against Alexander Zverev. Battling cramps and momentum swings, the Spaniard survived a five-set epic lasting five hours and 27 minutes to book his place in the final.
On Sunday, that resilience paid off — and a new chapter in men’s tennis was firmly written.
