Online refunds have become a routine part of digital shopping, whether it is returning a product, cancelling an order, or receiving money back for a delayed grocery delivery. However, scammers are now misusing this common process to trap unsuspecting customers and steal money.
India’s cyber safety awareness platform CyberDost, run under I4C, has flagged refund-related fraud as a growing threat across major e-commerce and delivery platforms.
What Is An Online Shopping Refund Scam?
A refund scam is a type of fraud where criminals pose as customer support agents and convince users that their refund is stuck or needs urgent verification. Instead of receiving the refund, victims end up transferring money or giving scammers access to their accounts.
The scam often starts when a customer faces a refund delay or payment issue and searches online for a company’s customer care number. Instead of reaching the official helpline, users may unknowingly call fake numbers promoted through misleading websites, advertisements, or social media posts. Once connected, fraudsters pretend to be company representatives and begin manipulating the customer.
What Scammers Do Once You Call Them
According to information, after gaining the victim’s trust, scammers claim they need to “process” the refund and ask for sensitive details. Victims may be told to share OTPs, provide bank information, approve small verification transactions, scan QR codes, or install remote access apps. Within minutes, money is withdrawn from their accounts instead of being refunded. In some cases, scammers even create fake refund dashboards or send realistic-looking messages to make the fraud appear legitimate.
Why Refund Scams Are Growing So Fast
Refund-related scams are spreading rapidly due to the huge rise in online shopping and returns, delayed refunds that make customers anxious, and the ease with which fake helpline pages can be created. Many people also trust quick Google search results without checking authenticity. Scammers take advantage of urgency, knowing that worried customers are more likely to follow instructions without verifying details.
Red Flags That Signal A Refund Scam
There are several warning signs that indicate a refund scam. These include customer care numbers that are not listed on official apps or websites, requests for OTPs or UPI approvals, pressure to act immediately, instructions to install screen-sharing apps, or claims that a refund will be processed through a payment rather than a reversal. Genuine companies never ask customers for OTPs, passwords, or remote access.
How To Protect Yourself From Refund Fraud
To stay safe, always contact customer support only through official apps or company websites. Never rely on helpline numbers found through random online searches. Do not share OTPs, PINs, or bank details with anyone, and avoid scanning QR codes sent by unknown callers. Customers should never install apps suggested by callers and should check refund status directly within the shopping platform. If a refund seems delayed, it is better to wait for official updates rather than searching externally for help.
What To Do If You Become A Victim
If you suspect fraud, immediate action is crucial. Block your bank card or UPI services at once, report the incident to your bank, and contact India’s cybercrime helpline at 1930. You should also file a complaint on the official cybercrime portal. Quick reporting can sometimes help in recovering lost funds.
Key Reminder For Shoppers
Online shopping refunds should always return automatically through the original payment method. Any caller demanding verification payments, OTPs, or QR scans is attempting fraud. Staying cautious and using only official customer support channels remains the strongest defence against these refund scam traps.
