Gujarat Man Pleads Against Deportation of Bangladeshi-Born Wife, Cites Family And Safety Concerns

A man from Gujarat’s Anand district has appealed to the state government not to deport his Bangladeshi-born wife, saying her life could be at risk if she is sent back to Bangladesh. The case has come to light during “Operation Delta Hunt”, a statewide drive launched by Gujarat Police against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

According to official figures, more than 600 Bangladeshi nationals have been detained across Gujarat this month for allegedly living in India illegally. Nearly 60 of them were detained in Anand district. Among those detained is a woman identified as Kajal, who allegedly entered India illegally around a decade ago and later married Anand resident Tarun Patel.

Patel, a resident of Lambhvel village, said he first met Kajal through Facebook in 2012-13 when she was living in Bangladesh. The two gradually fell in love. He claimed that Kajal tried to obtain a passport in Bangladesh so they could marry legally, but was unable to get one. According to Patel, she later entered India illegally after facing pressure from her family to marry someone else.

The couple has been living together as husband and wife since then and has two children, an eight-year-old and a two-year-old. Patel said they got married according to Hindu customs after Kajal came to India. He also claimed that she adopted Hindu traditions and regularly visits temples.

Patel said his wife was recently detained by the Anand Local Crime Branch after authorities found that she was living in India without valid documents. Deportation proceedings against her are now underway.

Appealing to Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi, Patel requested that his wife not be deported on humanitarian grounds. He said he fears for her safety if she is sent back to Bangladesh and is also worried about the future of their two children if they are separated from their mother.

Patel maintained that Kajal entered India only because she wanted to marry him and live with him. He said the family is willing to follow any legal process required for obtaining Indian citizenship and requested authorities to consider her case sympathetically.

According to the family, Kajal is currently staying at a women’s shelter home while further proceedings continue. Patel said their children have not been able to meet their mother since her detention nearly two weeks ago.

The couple’s elder son, Dhyan, also appealed to authorities to release his mother, saying he cannot live without her and hopes she returns home soon.

The case comes amid intensified action by Gujarat Police against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants under Operation Delta Hunt.

Anand Superintendent of Police GG Jasani was unavailable for comment. Inspector General of Police, Ahmedabad Range, Raghavendra Vatsa, said he was not aware of the specific case and would comment only after obtaining details from the Anand SP.
