MS Dhoni In The News For Wrong Reasons

| Updated: March 4, 2026 13:06

Former Indian captain MS Dhoni is in the news for wrong reasons. He has been issued an e-challan for overspeeding in Ranchi, adding to a series of recent off-field developments involving the cricket legend. He was driving a car.

According to traffic authorities, Dhoni’s vehicle was flagged by the city’s automated monitoring system for exceeding the prescribed speed limit near his residence. A digital challan of Rs.1,000 was generated under Section 183 of the Motor Vehicles Act as part of Ranchi’s standard enforcement mechanism.

Officials clarified that the violation was detected through surveillance cameras installed across key stretches of the city. Once the system recorded the breach, the penalty notice was issued electronically, in line with established traffic protocols. While the offence is minor, any development involving the former India skipper tends to attract significant public attention and quickly circulates on social media.

Dhoni is known for riding motorcycles and vintage cars.

Housing Board Notice Adds To Headlines

The traffic fine comes shortly after another matter concerning Dhoni surfaced in Jharkhand. The Jharkhand State Housing Board recently served him a notice over the alleged misuse of a residential plot in Ranchi.

Authorities have reportedly questioned whether the property — originally allotted strictly for residential use — was being utilised for commercial purposes. The plot in question is located on Harmu Road, where Dhoni had previously resided before moving to his current farmhouse-style home on Ring Road.

Officials are examining the nature of activities carried out on the premises to determine if any regulations were violated. No detailed public response from Dhoni’s side has been issued regarding the matter so far.

Focus Shifts To IPL 2026

Away from administrative and legal issues, Dhoni has turned his attention back to cricket as preparations for IPL 2026 gather pace. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) veteran has resumed practice sessions with the franchise, gradually working his way back into match rhythm.

The five-time IPL champions are aiming to recover from a disappointing 2025 season, during which they finished at the bottom of the points table after losing 10 of their 14 league matches.

Dhoni was retained under the IPL’s uncapped player rule for Rs. 4 crore, a retention structure that continues into the 2026 campaign. Although he no longer occupies a top-order batting slot, his experience and finishing abilities remain crucial to CSK’s strategy.

In IPL 2025, Dhoni featured in all 14 matches, scoring 196 runs at a strike rate of 135.17. Most of his contributions came in short, impactful bursts during the closing overs.

At 44, Dhoni’s presence extends beyond numbers. His leadership instincts, tactical clarity, and influence within the dressing room continue to define CSK’s identity as the team looks to script a turnaround in the upcoming season.

For now, while minor legal and regulatory matters have briefly placed him in the spotlight, Dhoni’s focus appears firmly set on the cricket field once again.
