Narender, Why  Surrender? Congress MP Shaktisinh Gohil Slams Modi For Bowing Down to Trump

| Updated: March 14, 2026 17:15

It is shocking and sad to see our Prime Minister so weak and bowing to the diktats of Donald Trump, Shaktisinh Gohil, Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, in the Rajya Sabha. has said. According to him, Trump instructs India to stop a war and New Delhi gives in. Trump decides where India should buy its oil from and India surrenders. Trump simply asks the Prime Minister — “Narender, surrender” — and the government meekly obliges, Gohil said.

Mocking the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s claims that India’s self-respect has risen globally, Gohil, a Congress Rajyasabha MP from Gujarat  said such a “Narender, Surrender” style of governance erodes national pride.

“It is immensely unfortunate that our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has no courage to stand up to Trump who ‘decides’ for India,” Gohil told the Upper House. “Stop the war, Trump instructs. Do not buy oil from Russia, Trump orders. I don’t know whether it is because of the Epstein files or some other reason, but Modi ji given in and abides to the ‘Narender Surrender’,” doctrine.

“Modi ji, we are with you. Do not be afraid. Gather courage and tell Trump that he is a liar,” Gohil added, drawing applause in the House.

India is the world’s largest democracy and a major geopolitical power. Yet when Donald Trump publicly suggests that he has instructed India on issues such as conflicts or strategic choices, there is rarely a sharp or immediate rebuttal from Narendra Modi, Gohil later told reporters.  This approach to Washington — which he termed the “Narender Surrender” policy — is gaining credibility as the Prime Minister shows unusual reluctance to push back when Trump makes sweeping claims about India’s decisions.

“Why should America decide that we cannot buy oil from Russia?” Gohil asked, adding that the government’s claim that India’s honour and international standing have risen is a hollow assertion. “If that were true, would America send back our citizens in handcuffs?” he asked, referring to the deportation of several Indians from the United States in handcuffs.

Drawing a historical contrast, Gohil recalled how former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had firmly told an American president that Washington had no right to decide which rice India should eat. “She made it clear that such decisions would be taken by India and the people of India, not by the United States,” he said.

“But now we have a Prime Minister who appears ready to surrender India’s interests to America. ‘Narender, Surrender’ is all Trump has to say and India complies meekly,” Gohil charged.

He noted that India’s foreign policy has traditionally been built on strategic autonomy — the principle that New Delhi decides its own course in diplomacy, defence and energy purchases. That doctrine, he said, was shaped over decades by leaders who insisted that India would engage with all global powers but submit to none.

According to Gohil, a confident government would publicly and clearly correct such claims. Instead, because “Narender Surrender” has become the norm, the perception is growing that America can publicly frame India’s choices without facing any pushback.

Diplomacy can be polite, but sovereignty cannot be negotiable. When foreign leaders speak as if they can dictate India’s decisions, the world should hear one clear message from New Delhi: India decides for India, Gohil told reporters.
