Bhabanipur’s 25,000 Gujarati Voters in Focus as Mahua Moitra Row Reframed as Political Debate, Not Community Attack
With an estimated 25,000 Gujarati voters in Bhabanipur, a recent controversy around Mahua Moitra’s remarks has taken on political significance ahead of polling, even as the Trinamool Congress positions the episode as a misinterpretation of a broader historical argument.
The row stems from comments made by Moitra in which she asserted that Bengalis played a leading role in India’s freedom struggle and questioned the visibility of Gujarati participation in that specific context. Referring to the colonial-era Cellular Jail, she cited figures to argue that a large proportion of those imprisoned or killed there were from Bengal, and challenged audiences to name Gujarati figures in that particular narrative. She also made a critical reference to Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, questioning his legacy in the freedom movement.
The remarks triggered a backlash, with sections interpreting them as a slight against the Gujarati community. However, within the TMC and among Moitra’s supporters, the comments are being framed differently — as a pointed critique of selective historical narratives rather than an attack on any community.
Party leaders have emphasised that Moitra’s intervention was part of a larger political discourse where regional contributions to the freedom struggle are often debated and highlighted. They argue that isolating her remarks from this context risks oversimplifying a complex historical and political conversation.
At the same time, the TMC has moved swiftly to reassure voters in Bhabanipur, a constituency represented by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and known for its diverse demographic profile. The visible wall-writing campaign in Gujarati across the area reflects an effort to directly engage with the community and reaffirm the party’s inclusive stance.
Senior leaders have clarified that the party does not endorse any form of regional or community-based division, while also underscoring that Moitra’s comments should not be construed as targeting Gujaratis as a whole. The emphasis has been on maintaining social harmony while allowing space for political debate.
Political observers note that the timing of the controversy — just ahead of elections — has amplified its impact. In tightly contested constituencies like Bhabanipur, even nuanced statements can quickly become focal points of mobilisation, particularly when they intersect with identity and historical memory.
Within the Gujarati community, responses have been varied. While some have expressed discomfort with the remarks, others have taken a more measured view, acknowledging the outreach efforts by the state leadership and the broader context in which the comments were made.
