NID Wants Rs 13.91 Lakh From Ex-Director For ‘Beyond Entitlement’ Residence Upkeep
Praveen Nahar, the former director of the National Institute of Design, is facing a Rs 13.91 lakh recovery claim. The demand includes electricity costs and sweeping and cleaning services for the official residence he used from June 2019 to October 2024.
The bulk of the claim (Rs 12.89 lakh) is towards a sweeper-cum-cleaner deployed at the director’s residence. NID has reportedly described the facility as “beyond entitlement” for someone in that position. The remaining Rs 1.02 lakh pertains to electricity charges for the same period.
The institute’s chief administrative officer, P S Pradeep, sent two separate emails to Nahar around four months ago, each addressing one of the two claims. Both communications asked him to deposit the amount immediately and stated that they had been issued with the approval of the current director.
Nahar resigned from NID in the second half of 2025 and now teaches design at IIT Gandhinagar. He said the demand caught him off guard. He has asked NID to explain the rules it is relying on and how exactly the figures were arrived at. Additionally, he pointed out that the matter never came up while he was actually running the institute.
He said he would respond once he had the answers he had asked for.
According to reports, the matter could have been resolved amicably. Officials in the know told a media house that going after a former director was not in keeping with how the institute had traditionally treated its senior members.
Those within NID described the move as unprecedented.
