Heatwaves aren’t just draining your energy—they’re increasingly disrupting gut health, doctors warn. As temperatures climb, hospitals are seeing a clear uptick in digestive issues, many of which are directly linked to prolonged exposure to extreme heat.

According to Dr Puneeth B. S, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at Manipal Hospital, there has been a noticeable surge in patients reporting stomach-related complaints. Cases of infections and digestive discomfort have risen by nearly 20% in recent weeks, tracking closely with the spike in temperatures.

From mild indigestion to more serious infections, the heat is placing added stress on the digestive system—making awareness and prevention crucial.

What’s Increasing This Summer

Doctors are reporting a rise in conditions such as Acute Gastroenteritis, food poisoning, bloating, constipation, indigestion, and even loss of appetite. Older adults are particularly at risk, as dehydration can quickly lead to electrolyte imbalances, triggering dizziness, fatigue, and low blood pressure.

There’s also an increase in anorectal issues like fissures and haemorrhoids, often caused by dehydration and hard stools—both more common during intense heat.

Why Heatwaves Are Hitting Your Gut

Several factors are driving this seasonal spike:

  • Faster food spoilage: High temperatures accelerate bacterial growth in food
  • Contaminated water: Stored or tanker water may carry harmful pathogens
  • Frequent eating out: Street food and cut fruits may lack proper hygiene
  • Dehydration: Insufficient fluid intake slows digestion and causes constipation
  • Irregular eating habits: Skipping meals due to heat can lead to nausea and gastric distress

Even small lapses in daily habits can significantly impact digestive health during summer.

When to Seek Medical Help

While minor stomach issues often resolve on their own, persistent diarrhoea, severe weakness, or signs of dehydration require medical attention. Doctors may recommend tests such as blood counts, electrolyte panels, kidney function tests, or stool analysis. In more serious or prolonged cases, procedures like endoscopy or colonoscopy may be needed.

How to Protect Your Gut

Simple, consistent habits can go a long way:

  • Drink 2.5–3 litres of clean water daily
  • Eat freshly cooked meals; avoid leftovers
  • Limit street food, especially in peak heat
  • Maintain strict hand hygiene
  • Be cautious with salads, cut fruits, and ice-based foods
  • Include fibre-rich foods to support digestion

Doctors also caution against self-medication, particularly antibiotics, which can worsen gut issues if used improperly.

Warning signs like high fever, blood in stools, persistent vomiting, or reduced urine output should never be ignored.

With heatwaves becoming more frequent and intense, staying alert to these risks—and adjusting daily habits accordingly—can help safeguard your gut health through the summer.
