Gujaratis are known to travel abroad and settle in countries like the UK, the US, and others. Among them, one Gujarati is now behind bars in a US jail. He has been sentenced to 12 years in prison in June 2025 for allegedly attempting fraud against an elderly American man.
Nirav Patel, a resident of Ahmedabad, had a dream just like many other Indians, to go to a foreign nation. He applied for a visa three times but was rejected all three times. In the end, he obtained a travel visa and went to the USA. As per his claim, initially he started working as a taxi driver before becoming the accused in the fraud case involving an elderly American man.
Nirav has asked the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of External Affairs, and Gujarat authorities for legal help, as he stated that he is innocent and was framed.
As per the letter written by Nirav, he claimed that he is innocent and was allegedly framed by a close relative, Dinesh Patel, also known as Bhola or Danny, who is allegedly running a fraudulent call center located at Navrangpura Gam, Ahmedabad. He also alleged that Dinesh’s fraudulent call center network is being protected through political support.
Lodged at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI), where he is identified in court records under case no. 23CR-30076, Nirav said that, as instructed by Dinesh, his close relative, he had collected gold bars. He also alleged that Dinesh engaged him with a paltry consideration of US$400, which he believed to be a legal payment and part of legitimate documentation.
Nirav alleged that all of this was done by Dinesh, and that he became a pawn in this illegal activity, while he himself is totally innocent. In his letter to the PMO, he wrote that during his time in jail, his mother died because the family did not have sufficient money for her treatment, and he was not even able to attend her funeral. Whereas his father, who is paralyzed from one side, has been forced to drive a rickshaw to run the family. On the other hand, his children were dropped out of school because they could not afford the school fees.
Nirav claimed that he is a target of the racket and is innocent. Thus, he asked for help from the Ministry of External Affairs and the PMO for legal, personal, or any other possible aid.
