The census, which was originally scheduled for the year 2021, was pushed back by 5 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis, and has now been scheduled for the year 2026-27. The procedure for it has already started in some states, whereas in Gujarat, the date for the first phase of the census has been announced by the Director of Census Operations. As per the details given by him, the Gujarat census phase one will take place from June 1.
As per the Director of Census Operations, Sujal Mayatra, the phase one exercise was originally slated for April, but due to local body elections, it has been pushed back and will now take place from June 1.
In this, self-enumeration will start from May 17 till May 31, during which citizens will be able to participate in the census by filling in the details online. Sujal Mayatra said that this is the first time that citizens themselves will be able to participate in the census by using the Government of India’s portal: https://e.census.gov.in.
After that, the door-to-door House Listing Operations (HLO) will start from June 1 till June 30. This process will take place in 35 districts and 17 municipal corporations of Gujarat. This will be the first phase of the census, whereas the second phase of the census will take place in February 2027.
As per the Director of Census Operations, Sujal Mayatra, more than 1.10 lakh people, including supervisors and enumerators, will be involved in this exercise, and they have to complete this exercise within 30 days. It is estimated that each enumerator will cover the data of 700 to 800 individuals.
The official said that during the house listing exercise, the enumerator will visit a household and collect information such as housing conditions and amenities, construction materials used, access to latrines, availability of LPG/PNG connections, the main source of lighting, fuel used for cooking, and vehicles owned, as there will be a total of 33 questions that will be asked to the individuals.
This is data collection for house listing, whereas the total population data will be collected during the population enumeration phase next year.
