Just days after publicly challenging a prominent television anchor and taking positions that generated intense political debate online, one of India’s most recognizable educators has found himself at the centre of a criminal investigation.
Patna Police have registered an FIR against educator Faisal Khan, better known as Khan Sir, in connection with a firing incident outside his coaching institute. The case includes serious charges, including attempted murder and violations under the Arms Act. Police have also launched efforts to question him as part of the ongoing investigation.
The development has triggered sharp reactions across social media, where Khan Sir enjoys a massive following among students and young aspirants. To many, he is not merely a coaching institute owner but a self-made teacher who built an educational empire by catering to students from modest backgrounds.
According to police, the FIR was registered after investigators examined viral videos, statements from security personnel and evidence gathered from the scene of violence outside Khan Global Studies in Patna.
At the heart of the controversy are allegations made by two security guards associated with the institute. According to the FIR, the guards allegedly told investigators that they were instructed to open fire when a crowd gathered outside the coaching centre. The complaint quotes them as claiming that Khan Sir and unidentified associates allegedly directed them to shoot and assured them that any consequences would be managed.
The guards reportedly admitted to firing multiple rounds. Police have since detained them, seized their weapons and sent the firearms for forensic examination.
The allegations represent a dramatic turn in a dispute that Khan Sir says began when his institute came under attack.
According to Khan Sir’s version, a group linked to a rival coaching institute vandalised the premises, assaulted security personnel and created unrest outside the centre. He initially claimed that miscreants had fired several rounds during the attack. He later modified parts of that account while maintaining that his institute had been targeted.
Police subsequently arrested the director of another coaching institute, Gyan Bindu Coaching, along with two associates in connection with the broader clash. However, the controversy escalated after videos surfaced allegedly showing security personnel linked to Khan Sir firing weapons during the confrontation.
Khan Sir has maintained that any firing by security guards was an act of self-defence amid a volatile situation. He has denied wrongdoing and stated that he was not initially aware of the FIR. At the same time, he has publicly said he is prepared to cooperate fully with investigators.
The case has rapidly evolved beyond a law-and-order issue and entered the realm of public debate.
Supporters argue that Khan Sir’s rise has made him a powerful and influential public figure. They point out that he emerged from humble beginnings, built a reputation through affordable education and became one of the country’s most recognized teaching personalities without the backing of major political or corporate networks.
Critics, however, contend that popularity cannot place anyone above scrutiny and that the allegations must be investigated thoroughly, irrespective of the individual’s public image.
What makes the controversy particularly explosive is the timing. Only days earlier, Khan Sir had once again entered the political spotlight through comments and public interventions that generated widespread attention. His supporters have therefore questioned whether he is being selectively targeted, while his critics insist that the investigation is based on evidence and witness statements rather than politics.
At present, both narratives remain matters of debate.
What is established is that an FIR has been filed, security guards have been detained, weapons have been seized, forensic examinations are underway and investigators are studying CCTV footage and viral videos to reconstruct the sequence of events.
What remains unproven are the most serious allegations — including claims that Khan Sir personally instructed guards to fire.
Those questions can ultimately be answered only through a detailed investigation and, if necessary, judicial scrutiny.
Until then, Bihar’s most famous teacher finds himself facing perhaps the toughest examination of his life — not in a classroom, but in the court of law and public opinion.
