Ex-Army Man With Alleged Drug And Bishnoi Gang Links Dies While Fleeing Police In Gujarat

| Updated: June 9, 2026 21:51

A late-night dispute between neighbours in Ahmedabad’s Bopal area ended in tragedy after a man with a criminal record allegedly fell from the fourth floor of a residential building while trying to escape from police.

The deceased has been identified as Mahavir Singh Sindhav, who had recently moved into a flat in Bopal. According to police, Sindhav was heavily intoxicated on Monday night when he got into an argument with residents living in another block of the housing society.

What began as a verbal dispute soon escalated, creating panic among the residents. Concerned by the situation, members of the society called the police through the 112 emergency helpline.

Police said that when Sindhav realized officers had arrived at the scene, he allegedly tried to flee before he could be detained. Investigators believe he ran towards the fourth-floor gallery or terrace in an attempt to avoid the police. During the escape, he reportedly lost his balance and fell from the fourth floor.

The fall caused severe head injuries and multiple injuries to his body, resulting in his death at the spot.

Bopal Police Station Inspector Sunil Chaudhary said that the preliminary investigation and statements from eyewitnesses indicate that Sindhav fell while attempting to escape and that there was no physical confrontation between him and the police at the time of the incident.

According to the officer, Mahavir Singh was running away after learning that police had reached the location. During his escape attempt, he slipped and fell on his own, leading to his death. Police have registered an accidental death case.

His body has been sent to Sola Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination, while investigators continue to document the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The incident has once again brought attention to Sindhav’s criminal background. According to police records, several serious criminal cases had been registered against him at different police stations.

Before entering the world of crime, Sindhav had reportedly served as a supply soldier in the Indian Army. Investigators believe that after leaving the service, he came under the radar of law enforcement agencies for his alleged involvement in narcotics-related activities.

His name had also surfaced during a major drug seizure in 2023. Acting on a tip-off, a Local Crime Branch (LCB) team arrested three residents of Rajasthan – Akshay Ramkumar Delu, Ankit Vishnuram Bishnoi, and Vikramsinh Jadeja – from a flat in Surendranagar. During the operation, police seized narcotics worth ₹17.81 lakh.

During the investigation, officials of the Special Operations Group (SOG) allegedly uncovered an interstate drug network. Police sources claimed that the rented flat used in the case had been arranged by Sindhav through one of his associates.

The investigation also generated suspicions that Sindhav was supplying narcotics to operatives allegedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Based on these leads, the Surendranagar LCB detained and questioned him during the investigation.

While police have maintained that the Bopal incident was an accidental death caused by a fall during an escape attempt, Sindhav’s sudden death has once again drawn attention to the alleged nexus between organized crime, the narcotics trade, and local criminal networks operating across Gujarat.
