When the Air India plane crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad, 260 lives were lost including 241 passengers and crew on board in an instant. Viswashkumar, however, was the lone survivor. Escaping death should have been a miracle, but for him, survival has come with a different kind of pain, one that continues every day.
Nearly a year after the tragedy, the 39-year-old, who returned to the UK in September, is still struggling to rebuild his life. He is dealing with physical injuries, emotional trauma, financial difficulties, and psychological stress. While people call him lucky to be alive, he says it does not always feel that way.
Viswashkumar now spends most of his time at home in Leicester. He rarely goes out, avoids meeting friends or even family members, and finds it difficult to do simple everyday activities like shopping or taking his son to school. His family says there are moments of hope, but he often sits quietly, lost in his thoughts.
The memory of the crash still haunts him. He recalls that he survived only because he was sitting in seat 11A, while almost everyone around him lost their lives. The hardest part, he says, is knowing that so many others, including his own brother, never made it.
The tragedy has also created financial pressure. Unable to work, he is facing mounting expenses while trying to recover. His lawyers are seeking compensation and support for his medical treatment and rehabilitation. They are also closely following the official investigation into the crash to understand what went wrong.
Despite everything, Viswashkumar says he is grateful to be alive and to be with his wife and son. But survival, he explains, does not mean life has returned to normal. The accident changed him forever, and every day is now a struggle to move forward.
His story is a reminder that while disasters end in a moment, the pain they leave behind can last for years. Sometimes, surviving is only the beginning of a much longer battle.
