First Made-in-India C-295 Aircraft Takes Flight: Why It Is A Landmark Moment

| Updated: June 11, 2026 20:44

India has achieved a major milestone in its defence and aviation sector. The first Made-in-India C-295 military transport aircraft successfully completed its maiden (first) test flight from the Final Assembly Line in Vadodara.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) announced the successful flight and said the achievement reinforces India’s growing aerospace capabilities. It also reflects the IAF’s commitment to promoting indigenous defence manufacturing under the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Congratulating everyone involved in the project, the IAF said the successful flight demonstrates India’s increasing ability to build advanced aerospace systems within the country.

An Important Step for the Programme

Airbus Defence also described the flight as an important milestone. According to the company, the maiden test flight is a crucial step in the aircraft’s post-production testing process.

The company said this is the first of 40 C-295 aircraft that will be built in India, and the successful test flight brings the programme closer to delivering the first India-made aircraft to the Indian Air Force later this year.

Why Is This Flight Significant?

The successful maiden flight of the first Made-in-India C-295 marks a major milestone for India’s aerospace and defence sectors because it is the first military aircraft being manufactured in the country by the private sector.

The programme represents an important step in strengthening India’s domestic defence manufacturing capabilities.

Why Is the C-295 Important?

The C-295 is a tactical transport aircraft designed to perform a wide range of missions. It can be used for, troop transport, cargo transport, maritime patrol, airborne warning, surveillance and reconnaissance, signals intelligence, armed close air support, medical evacuation, VIP transport and airborne firefighting.

According to Airbus, the aircraft can carry up to eight tonnes of payload or as many as 70 troops. It can also be configured for air-to-air refuelling of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

The company says the platform combines versatility, reliability, manoeuvrability and fuel efficiency, with an endurance of up to 13 hours.

For India, the maiden flight is significant not only because it advances the IAF’s transport aircraft programme, but also because it marks a key step in the country’s efforts to build military aircraft domestically under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The Bigger Picture

The Indian Air Force is procuring 56 C-295 transport aircraft at a cost of around ₹21,935 crore. Out of these, 16 aircraft will be delivered in fly-away condition, while the remaining 40 aircraft will be assembled in India by Tata Advanced Systems Limited in partnership with Airbus at a production facility in Vadodara.

The successful maiden flight of the first Made-in-India C-295 is therefore an important milestone, bringing India one step closer to manufacturing and delivering advanced military transport aircraft within the country.
