A government primary school teacher in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district has been suspended and arrested after he allegedly sent a Class 7 student to buy liquor during school hours. The incident took place at Khapat Primary School in Una taluka, raising serious concerns over student safety and the conduct of teachers.
According to police, the incident happened on June 20 at around 8 am. Since Gujarat is a dry state where the manufacture, sale and consumption of liquor are prohibited, the allegation has drawn strong action from both the education department and the police.
Student Allegedly Given Money to Buy Liquor
As per the First Information Report (FIR), the accused teacher, Hareshgiri Gulabgiri Goswami, who taught Classes 6 to 8, allegedly lured a Class 7 student by first giving him Rs 20 and later handing over Rs 500 to purchase a bottle of liquor.
The matter came to light after the school authorities learned about the incident.
School Principal Reported the Matter
After learning about the incident, the principal of Khapat Primary School informed the Taluka Primary Education Officer. A formal complaint was later filed on Friday, following which an FIR was registered against the teacher.
Based on the FIR, Una police arrested Goswami for his alleged role in the incident.
Teacher Suspended Immediately
State Primary, Secondary and Adult Education Minister Pradyuman Vaja said the government treated the matter with utmost seriousness.
He said he ordered the immediate suspension of the teacher, after which the District Development Officer acted without delay and suspended Goswami from service.
The minister said strict action was necessary because the incident involved a school student and took place during school hours.
Three-Member Inquiry Committee Formed
Apart from the police investigation, the education department has also launched a departmental inquiry into the incident. A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the matter in detail. The committee includes:
The Deputy District Development Officer of Gir Somnath
The Taluka Primary Education Officer of Veraval
The Taluka Development Officer of Gir Gadhada
The committee will examine the circumstances of the incident and submit its findings to the authorities.
Investigation Underway
The accused teacher remains under investigation while both the police and the education department continue to probe the case. Authorities are expected to examine all aspects of the incident, including how the student was allegedly persuaded to buy liquor and whether any further action is required against those responsible.
