An Ahmedabad-based businessman has approached the police after receiving a WhatsApp audio message from a person claiming to be gangster Goldy Brar. The caller demanded ₹5 crore and threatened to kill the businessman and his family if the money was not paid.
The complaint has led to a police investigation to determine whether the threat is directly linked to Brar or whether someone is using his name to extort money.
Businessman received threat after returning from Mumbai
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the businessman, 50, lives near Khoraj in Gandhinagar’s Adani Shantigram area. He runs a granite business in Rajasthan, while his son is involved in the diamond trade in Ahmedabad.
Police said the businessman had travelled to Mumbai on July 7 and returned to Ahmedabad early on July 10. Later that afternoon, he noticed a missed WhatsApp call from an international number. When he checked the chat, he found an audio message sent from the same number.
The audio recording, reportedly in Hindi, claimed to be from Goldy Brar. The caller allegedly warned the businessman that he had already gathered information about his family and relatives. The message demanded ₹5 crore, stating that failure to pay would make him a “target.”
Businessman blocked number but received more calls
After hearing the message, the businessman became alarmed and immediately blocked the number. However, he allegedly continued receiving repeated missed calls from another international number.
Concerned about his safety and that of his family, he approached the Sirohi police in Rajasthan on July 12 and filed a complaint.
Case transferred to Ahmedabad
The complaint was initially registered as a Zero FIR at the Sirohi police station because the incident had links to another jurisdiction. The case was later transferred to Adalaj police station in Gandhinagar, where a formal FIR has now been registered.
Police have booked the case under charges related to criminal intimidation and extortion.
Police checking authenticity of threat
Investigators are now examining whether the international phone numbers, the audio recording and the WhatsApp account have any genuine connection to Goldy Brar or if someone simply used his name to threaten the businessman.
Officials are also analysing digital evidence, including WhatsApp records, call details and other electronic data, to trace the source of the calls and identify those responsible.
Goldy Brar’s name often used in extortion cases
Police noted that Goldy Brar is wanted by Indian agencies in several criminal cases. His name has frequently surfaced in extortion threats targeting businessmen across northern and western India.
At this stage, investigators have not confirmed whether the latest threat has any direct link to Brar. The investigation is ongoing, and police are working to verify the identity of the caller and the authenticity of the message.
