A village in Ahmedabad district has been cut off from nearby areas after the Bhogavo river overflowed following heavy rainfall, turning Vanitalav Bhal in Dholera taluka into an island-like area.
The flooding came just a day after large-scale rescue operations in Dholka, Bavla and Viramgam talukas were completed. With water levels continuing to rise in some parts of the district, rescue teams and local authorities are now working to move people from the affected village to safer locations.
Bhogavo River Floods Dholera Village
The Bhogavo river, which flows from west to east, crossed its banks during the night between Sunday and Monday. The rising water entered areas around Vanitalav Bhal village, located on the southern bank of the river.
The village is situated near the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, around 100 km from Ahmedabad city. As the river water continued to rise, the village lost road connectivity with surrounding areas, creating an island-like situation.
Ahmedabad Rural Police reached the village on Monday morning and began working with the district administration and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to rescue people who were trapped due to the floodwaters.
Ahmedabad Rural Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Jat said that the water flow into the village from upstream was continuously increasing because of heavy rain. This resulted in the village becoming disconnected from the surrounding areas.
Rescue Operations Underway
Police, district officials and NDRF teams are working together to shift people from the affected areas to safer locations.
Authorities have also closed roads where floodwater has made travel dangerous. The approach road towards Anandpur and Buranpur villages has been shut because of the presence of Bhogavo river water.
Police teams are carrying out continuous patrolling and keeping watch over the affected areas to prevent people from attempting to cross flooded roads or enter dangerous waterlogged zones.
The police have appealed to residents and commuters not to use roads that have been closed due to flooding. People have also been warned not to enter rivers or water-filled areas and to follow only official updates and instructions issued by the police and district administration.
Flooding Affects Several Parts of Ahmedabad District
The situation in Dholera is different from the flooding seen in other parts of Ahmedabad district.
While Dholera has been affected by the overflowing Bhogavo river, flooding in Dholka, Bavla and Viramgam was caused by the overflowing Sabarmati river and water flowing into the region from North Gujarat.
The flooding has affected around 10,000 people across Ahmedabad district over the past five days. Heavy rainfall since July 23 caused water to enter several areas, leading to rescue and relocation operations.
In the Bavla-Changodar region, more than 2,400 people received assistance at Gallops Industrial Park. Officials said around 1,000 people were rescued, while another 1,400 people were moved to safer places on Saturday.
More than 400 people were also rescued from Dholka town and nearby villages during the flood situation.
Major Roads Reopened After Floodwaters Recede
The floods also disrupted traffic on two important roads from July 23.
The Ahmedabad-Rajkot NH47 stretch between Ahmedabad and Bagodara and the Ahmedabad-Viramgam SH17 stretch between Sanand and Viramgam were closed because of flooding.
As the rain stopped and floodwater began moving towards Nalsarovar, the water levels gradually came down. The two major routes were reopened late on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
However, the latest flooding in Dholera shows that some parts of Ahmedabad district continue to face challenges from rising water levels and heavy rainfall.
Dholera’s Strategic Importance
The flooding has also affected an area that is important to Gujarat’s future industrial development.
Dholera is home to the Dholera Special Investment Region and is planned as India’s first greenfield smart city. It is also a major industrial hub being developed along the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor.
As rescue operations continue in Vanitalav Bhal, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging people to avoid flooded roads and water bodies. Residents have been asked to remain alert and follow instructions from officials until the water situation improves.
