A shocking murder-suicide case has come to light from Surat’s Varachha area, where a 35-year-old man allegedly strangled his foster mother to death before ending his own life by hanging. Police believe the incident may have been triggered by mounting financial stress after the man reportedly suffered heavy losses in the share market and accumulated debts of around ₹45 lakh.
The deceased have been identified as Jatin Sonani (35) and his foster mother Bhanuben Sonani (63). They lived together in an apartment in Rupam Society on Ashwini Kumar Road in Surat.
Neighbour’s Visit Led to the Discovery
The incident was discovered on Friday morning when a neighbour noticed something unusual at the Sonani residence. According to police, the neighbour first spotted Jatin hanging and immediately alerted family members, who then informed the police.
When officers entered the house, they found Bhanuben lying motionless on a bed, while Jatin was found hanging. Both bodies were later shifted to SMIMER Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Post-Mortem Confirmed Murder and Suicide
The post-mortem report confirmed that Bhanuben died due to strangulation using a wire or thread. Jatin’s cause of death was confirmed as suicide by hanging.
Investigators said the medical findings matched the initial evidence found at the scene.
Suicide Note Recovered During Investigation
During the preliminary investigation, police recovered a suicide note from the house. In the note, Jatin reportedly apologised to his foster mother and admitted to killing her before taking his own life.
Police said the note also mentioned that he was under severe financial pressure after suffering major losses in the share market.
Investigators believe Jatin had accumulated debts of nearly ₹45 lakh, which may have pushed him into extreme distress.
Police: Financial Losses May Have Triggered the Incident
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) Alok Kumar said the incident came to light at around 10 am on Friday.
According to the officer, the initial investigation suggests Jatin had suffered heavy losses in the stock market. Police also found that he had previously fallen into debt, but at that time his relatives and family members had helped him recover financially.
The suicide note reportedly contains Jatin’s confession about killing his foster mother and ending his own life due to the debt burden. However, police have clarified that they are still investigating whether any other factors may have contributed to the incident.
Foster Mother Had Adopted Him as an Infant
Police said Jatin was unmarried and had been adopted by Bhanuben from a relative when he was just six months old. The two had been living together in Surat for several years.
Investigators believe Jatin feared that his foster mother would be left without support after his death. Based on the initial probe, police suspect he allegedly decided to kill her before taking his own life.
Investigation Continues
Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the case, including Jatin’s financial records and other possible reasons behind the incident. Officials have said the investigation is still underway, and further details will emerge after completing all legal and forensic procedures.
