A 32-year-old man from Kadi in Mehsana district, Gujarat, has been charged with first-degree murder in Chicago after his wife was stabbed to death inside an apartment in the city.
The woman, also 32, was found unresponsive with a stab wound to her neck in an apartment in the 4800 block of North Avers Avenue in Albany Park on August 9. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accused was arrested around nine hours after the killing at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, according to police.
Woman Found Dead Inside Chicago Apartment
Police responded to the apartment at around 1:48 pm local time on August 9 after receiving information about the incident.
Officers found the woman unresponsive inside the apartment. She had suffered a serious stab wound to her neck and was declared dead at the scene.
Police have confirmed the killing, the stabbing injury, the location of the incident, the arrest and the murder charge. The identity of the woman has not been publicly disclosed.
Accused Arrested at O’Hare Airport
Investigators reportedly tracked down the accused after the killing. He was arrested approximately nine hours later at O’Hare International Airport.
He has now been charged with first-degree murder in connection with his wife’s death.
The circumstances leading up to the killing and the exact motive remain under investigation.
Couple Had Moved to the US Eight Years Ago
According to relatives, the couple had moved to the United States around eight years ago. They initially lived in Michigan before relocating to Chicago. The couple also had a five-year-old daughter.
Family members claimed that the relationship between the couple had been troubled for some time. They alleged that the woman had left her husband twice and had been in a relationship with another man who was nearly a decade younger than her.
According to the family, the couple’s daughter remained in the accused man’s care during the woman’s absence.
Daughter Was Sent to India Before the Killing
Relatives said the accused had sent his five-year-old daughter to India a few days before the murder.
On the day of the killing, he contacted his wife and asked her to take the child with her.
However, family members claimed that the request was only a pretext to bring the woman to the apartment, where she was later attacked.
These claims are part of the information provided by relatives and will be subject to the ongoing investigation.
He Had Spoken About Emotional Distress Months Earlier
The couple’s relationship had reportedly faced difficulties for several months.
In May this year, after the woman had left him for the first time, the accused posted a video in Gujarati in which he spoke about the emotional distress he was experiencing.
In the video, he reportedly spoke about contemplating suicide and appealed to relatives to intervene in the couple’s marital problems.
The woman later returned after her relationship with the younger man reportedly ended. However, the reconciliation did not last long, according to relatives. She eventually left him again.
Investigation Continues
The latest case has brought renewed attention to the couple’s troubled relationship and the events that took place before the killing.
Police have so far confirmed the woman’s death, the stab wound, the location of the incident, the arrest of the accused and the first-degree murder charge.
The investigation will now focus on establishing what happened inside the apartment, the events leading up to the stabbing and the circumstances surrounding the accused’s arrest at the airport.
The allegations made by relatives will also have to be examined as part of the legal process. The accused remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
