A man from Gujarat has been caught up in a US federal case over allegations that he falsely claimed to be an American citizen while trying to take part in the 2024 presidential election.
The accused, Mukesh Chaudhari, an Indian national from Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Minnesota on two counts linked to the alleged attempt.
The case centres on what prosecutors say was a false declaration of US citizenship. However, authorities have not confirmed whether Chaudhari ultimately cast a ballot in the election.
Case traces back to Election Day
According to the allegations, Chaudhari made the declaration on November 5, 2024, the day Americans voted in the presidential election.
Under Minnesota’s voting rules, people signing the voter registration documentation are required to affirm that they hold a US passport.
Prosecutors allege that Chaudhari knowingly made a false declaration on a voter eligibility certificate, presenting himself as an American citizen and therefore eligible to participate in the election. The 2024 presidential contest was ultimately won by Donald Trump.
Two charges filed against Chaudhari
The Minnesota federal case involves two counts against Chaudhari.
One concerns allegedly providing false information to voting machinery, while the second relates to allegedly representing himself as a US citizen for the purpose of voting.
If convicted, each charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison. The maximum sentence is not the same as the punishment Chaudhari will necessarily receive. His guilt would first have to be established through the legal process.
Did he actually cast a vote?
One of the key unanswered questions in the case is whether Chaudhari actually managed to vote. The US Department of Justice has not confirmed that he cast a ballot before federal investigators intervened.
Authorities have also not publicly clarified his immigration status. It remains unknown from the available information whether he was a lawful permanent resident or was in the US without legal status.
Authorities investigating the alleged attempt
The case has drawn the attention of Homeland Security officials and local sheriffs, who are examining how Chaudhari allegedly attempted to get through the voting process.
Investigators are also trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged false declaration and how he believed the claim could be used to participate in the election.
A rare but politically sensitive issue
The prosecution comes as the US has stepped up attention on election integrity, voting eligibility and border security.
The Trump administration has placed increased emphasis on preventing non-citizens from participating in elections, making cases involving alleged non-citizen voting particularly politically sensitive.
At the same time, such federal prosecutions are described as relatively uncommon. Their political significance, however, has grown amid the wider debate over election security in the US.
What the indictment means
Chaudhari has been indicted, not convicted. The charges represent allegations brought by prosecutors, and the court will determine the outcome.
For now, the case raises questions over an alleged attempt by an Indian national from Gujarat, described in the report as an Amdavadi, to claim US citizenship during the 2024 election process.
Importantly, the available information does not establish that Chaudhari successfully cast a vote.
