A medical test meant to help a family find a possible stem-cell donor has now led to a rape complaint and a police investigation in Gujarat’s Morbi.
The woman, whose husband is suffering from blood cancer, approached the police on September 9, 2026, alleging that she was raped in 2020 by the husband of a former Morbi Nagarpalika councillor.
A Medical Test That Changed the Course of the Case
According to the complaint, the accused had earlier given her ₹1 lakh when her husband needed money for medical treatment. She has alleged that he later raped her in 2020.
The matter came to light years later after the woman’s husband underwent testing to check whether their son could be a suitable stem-cell or bone-marrow donor for him. The reported test results did not show the expected compatibility.
The result reportedly raised questions within the family. The woman then allegedly told her husband about the incident she says took place in 2020. Following this, the rape complaint was registered with the police.
Police are now investigating the allegations and have said they will seek permission from the court for a DNA test to establish the child’s biological parentage.
However, stem-cell compatibility and biological parentage are not the same thing. A child can inherit only about half of their HLA markers from each parent and can potentially be a half-match, or haploidentical donor, for a parent. Therefore, a child not being a suitable donor does not by itself prove that the man is not the biological father.
The DNA test, if permitted by the court, could provide separate evidence on the question of biological parentage.
For now, the rape allegation remains under investigation. The police are yet to establish the facts of the case, while the DNA test and further legal proceedings are pending.
