Ahmedabad, which has grown into one of Gujarat’s most important financial and commercial centres, has a history deeply connected to India’s freedom struggle. The city’s roots go back to a time when several freedom fighters and leaders played an important role in shaping its growth and administration. One of the most important parts of this history is Sardar Patel Bhavan, named after India’s Iron Man, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The building holds memories of the time when Patel played an important role in managing the city’s affairs.
Built in 1885, Sardar Patel Bhavan is now around 141 years old. The building holds great historical importance as it is connected to the early days of Ahmedabad’s municipal administration, when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel served the city. Today, the building is recognised as a Grade I heritage property by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), making it important for the authorities to maintain and preserve its history and structure.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel served in the Ahmedabad Municipality from 1917 to 1928, first as a councillor and later as its president. He became the municipality’s president in 1924 and continued working in civic administration until April 1928. He later resigned to focus on India’s freedom movement. During his time in the municipality, he took several initiatives that helped shape the foundation of modern Ahmedabad.
The building was originally constructed as an administrative office. Its structure includes brick walls, a jack-arch roof, wooden roof supports, arched corridors and a grand front design. Over the years, it has remained an important part of Ahmedabad’s history and old architecture.
Recently, students from CEPT University studied Sardar Patel Bhavan to understand its condition, strength and ability to withstand earthquakes. The study was carried out by the student of the Faculty of Technology.
As part of the study, researchers examined the building’s structure, its connection with the soil and its ability to withstand earthquake conditions. The study found that the building is suitable for Ahmedabad’s seismic zone. However, researchers also found that some parts of the structure need attention.
The study identified several issues, including cracks, moisture, fading surfaces, biological growth and damage to parts of the building. Researchers also found that the structure was slowly settling into the soil. These are signs of ageing that need to be monitored.
Along with studying the building’s condition, researchers also tested different methods to strengthen its structure using a building model. One of the methods studied was masonry stitching, which helps strengthen cracked brick walls.
Although the study found the building suitable for Ahmedabad’s seismic zone, it also suggested that structural strengthening is needed to protect it in the long run.
A detailed report with suggestions for possible repair and conservation work will be submitted to AMC after another ongoing project at the site is completed.
Sardar Patel Bhavan is not just an old building. It holds an important place in Ahmedabad’s history because of its connection with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and the city’s early administration.
As Ahmedabad continues to grow as a modern city and financial hub, buildings like Sardar Patel Bhavan remind people of its historical roots and the leaders who contributed to its development.
The recent CEPT University study has brought attention to the building’s condition and the need to protect it. At around 141 years old, preserving this landmark is important not only for its architecture but also for the history and memories it carries for future generations.
