27-year-old auto-rickshaw driver Vikram Dantani is in the news these days. he invited Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for a meal at his home. During a dialogue with auto-rickshaw drivers at Ahmedabad, Vikram proposed in public and Kejriwal accepted the invitation.

Vikram Dantani’s home in Dantani Nagar in Ghatlodia falls in the constituencies of Home Minister Amit Shah, and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. He hails from the socially and economically backward class, Devi Pujak community. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had attended a function organized by the community only a day ago.

Vikram’s family lives at Dantani Nagar for the last 35 years. Vikram married Nisha 2 years ago. Nisha, a worshipper of Mother Goddess hails from Raghuveer Nagar in the Tagore Garden area of Delhi. After all, knowingly or unknowingly, the Chief Minister of Delhi had come to the house of Delhi’s daughter.

Vikram who got nationwide limelight after he became the charioteer AAP trio Arvind Kejriwal, Gopal Italia, and Isudan Gadhvi is a BJP voter for years. he says he felt the need to change his political views after witnessing government neglect and rising inflation during Corona.

Vikram has his reasons for his displeasure. He says we voted for BJP for years., but saw the worst days of life in two years during the Corona lockdown. There was no source of income and no help from the government and no subsidies. He alleges that no help came from the BJP MLA, who incidentally happens to be the current Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

Auto rickshaw driver Vikram Dantani’s rickshaw was bought by late his father 10 years ago. The ever-increasing price of CNG bothers Vikram, he says that CNG of 150 is used in a day while diesel of 150 lasts for three days. He hardly earns 10 -12 thousand and says it is inadequate to sustain the family which consists of one-year-old daughter Riya and his wife.

Vikram is also a member of the Rickshaw Driver Ekta Union, which was established after Corona. This organization has more than 4500 members while the number of rickshaw pullers in Ahmedabad is more than 20 thousand.

Vikram says he went to the Kejriwal event in Ahmedabad after rickshaw pullers were asked by Ekta Union to attend He smiled while saying “I had seen a video in which Kejriwal had gone to a rickshaw driver’s house in Punjab to have food, so I also invited him and he came to my house to eat food.” Bhupendra Patel, the Chief Minister, has never visited the area despite being MLA, he added.

Vikram lives with his mother, three younger brothers, wife, and daughter in a one-room house in Dantaninagar. It was built by his grandfather. Both his sisters got married in Ahmedabad.

Vikram’s mother Vasantiben says “the electricity bill has risen from Rs.700-1000 to Rs. 2000. While the cost of LPG cylinder even after subsidy is Rs 1060.” She lamented that she would also like a house under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana but due to paperwork, she is not able to get it.

Vikram believes Kejriwal has come up with a better plan. His neighbors also, traditional voters of BJP who used to vote for BJP are keeping their fingers crossed.
