Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is currently in the final stages of discussions with Google, in order to get a unique geotag for every property in the city. The two entities are set to sign an MoU in this regard soon. This agreement will include every property – commercial, residential, chawls as well as special buildings – that comes under the administration of the civic body. Of the 20 lakh properties in the city, nearly 15 lakh fall under the AMC.
Google has already provided ‘Google Plus’ codes in some cities like Pune and Kolkata. The system in Ahmedabad will be similar as well. However, instead of these codes, Google will use a unique alphanumeric digital id for the properties, in turn developing a Unique Address System (UAS) for the city. Unique numbers will be given to every address and these will be tagged in Google maps.
When this system goes live, finding an address will become extremely easy. Food and grocery, courier, and other forms of deliveries will have a map to the doorstep. Booking cabs will become that much easier as the location will be exact. Cases of packages getting delivered to the wrong addresses will decrease significantly. Amdavadis just have to send the ‘smart address’ to their associates to guide them to the desired venues.
