The redevelopment of Ahmedabad railway station will focus on green economic development and promote the use of public transport.
The tender for the redevelopment of Ahmedabad railway station as an “iconic world class station” has been finalised under the Amrit Bharat Station scheme of the Railways. Under the scheme, around 1,300 stations are being upgraded all over the country.
Sanjeev Kumar, Chief Project Manager at Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), which is overseeing the redevelopment work of Ahmedabad station, said this at the 82nd Indian Road Congress Annual Session.
“Under the scheme, three stations were chosen for the creation of iconic structures – Ahmedabad, CSMT (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) in Mumbai and New Delhi railway station. While work in CSMT has already started, we have finalised the tender for Ahmedabad station,” Sanjeev Kumar added.
Key Features of the Revamped Station
The revamped station will have a wide roof plaza landscape with local art to give the feeling of an airport. The station will be commercially exploited, increasing the value of the land and creating jobs. The revenue generated commercially will be utilised for the operation and maintenance of the station. As per the master plan, the station’s iconic twin-tower design is inspired by Modhera Sun Temple. Each platform in the revamped station will have four lifts.
To curb the traffic near the crowded station, Railways has proposed an elevated network – two accesses from north and south, connecting Sarangpur Bridge and Kalupur bridge. Further, officials have proposed to widen the two bridges to 6-lanes.
Construction Timeline
The work will be done in phases, with trains being blocked on three platforms at a time for demolition and reconstruction. For three months, some trains will be diverted to Sabarmati, Gandhinagar and Vatva.
The redevelopment of Ahmedabad railway station is a major project that will transform the station into a world-class facility. The project will also promote green economic development and make the station more accessible for passengers.
