Another Sexual Harassment Complaint Hits Cadila

| Updated: March 30, 2024 11:19

The accused was earlier named as an abettor in the alleged rape case against Rajiv Modi

Cadila Pharmaceuticals is once more in hot waters. A 40-year-old employee has lodged a complaint with the Mahila Crime police alleging that an executive of the company harassed her sexually.

Incidentally, this executive was earlier named as an abettor in an alleged rape case filed by a Bulgarian woman against the company’s CMD, Rajiv Modi in 2023.

A senior police officer said, “A woman, aged 40, who worked with the company for around five to six years, approached the Mahila Crime police alleging that she was harassed, and lewd comments were passed on her.”

The officer added that she took the step after the Bulgarian woman, 27, a former flight attendant with Modi, challenged the police clean chit to Modi before a local court.

Probe initiated

“The plea by the 40-year-old woman stated that the company executive patted her on her back indecently in the presence of other employees,” said the officer. Cops have initiated an inquiry into the matter. An FIR is yet to be filed.

Meanwhile, a team of city police officials inquiring into the delay in filing an FIR on the allegations levelled by the Bulgarian woman, has reportedly found information that a former IPS officer was involved in the episode.

“We have found that the IPS officer had instructed Modi to format all data from his phones and laptops and also to delete the chat with the woman,” said a senior police officer.

Following a Gujarat High Court order, Sola police had on December 31, 2023 filed an FIR against the CMD under IPC sections 376 (rape), 354 (molestation), and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoking breach of peace).

On December 22, the high court ordered an investigation into the woman’s rape allegation levelled against Modi. The court directed that the probe be supervised by a senior IPS officer nominated by the deputy inspector general of police (law and order).

Rajiv Modi gets clean chit

In February 2024, the Sola police gave a clean chit to Modi. The Bulgarian woman on Tuesday filed her objection to the clean chit.

The Bulgarian woman was hired as a flight attendant, but was made butler cum personal assistant without giving any reason. In her petition filed in HC, she claimed that five more women have suffered the same fate as her, however, they have been silent for some reason.

Rajiv Modi and his wife Monica got divorced in October 2018, with Modi paying his  ex-wife Rs 200 crore as one-time alimony. The custody of their then 17-year-old son was handed to Modi.

According to sources, Monica had registered a complaint of domestic violence and adultery against Modi at Ahmedabad’s Sola police station. However, lawyers from both sides had persuaded the parties to reach a settlement.
