Ashram and his son Narayan Sai, who are serving sentences in a rape case, have applied for bail in the Gujarat High Court.
Asaram is facing a trial in a Gandhinagar district court and has been lodged in Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan after being convicted for sexual assault on a minor in 2013. Since then, he has been lodged in jail for the last eight years in a nationwide rape case, on which bail was sought on the grounds of his riping age.
Asaram’s lawyer argued before the court that he had some other ailments besides Covid and was hospitalised several times during his time in prison. It was also argued through Asaram’s counsel that the apex court had directed that if an accused had been in jail for eight years, he could be granted bail on that basis.
He has been asked to produce his latest medical certificate during the next hearing on November 26.
